The target, Michael Stürzenberger, is a prominent critic of Islam

An Afghan migrant stabbed a politician during a campaign event in Mannheim, Germany. The grisly attack, including the attacker’s death, was captured on livestream.

In footage posted to Twitter, the attacker, identified as 25-year-old Suleiman A., can be seen attacking 59-year-old Michael Stürzenberger, a prominent critic of Islam and former leader of the German Freedom Party.

Chaos ensues as a nearby policeman tackles a bystander who has intervened and restrained the attacker, and then gets stabbed in the back and neck by the attacker.

The attacker was shot dead at the scene. A policeman is said to be in a critical condition. A total of six people were stabbed.

Stürzenberger, who according to police was handing out “educational information” at the time of the attack, is well known for his trenchant criticism of Islam. He has been convicted of “incitement to hatred” for his statements and was under close observation by the Bavarian security services between 2013 and 2022.

Although the motivation for the attack is unclear at this time, religion is likely to be the cause. Footage from social media showed Muslim immigrants celebrating the attack and threatening further attacks.
